# How long credit score improvement takes

Some changes land in a few weeks. Others take months. Here's a realistic timeline for each of the things you might have just done.

**The short version:** it depends what you've changed. Electoral Roll registration takes 1–3 months, cutting your utilisation 4–6 weeks, and consistent payments show real benefit after 3–6 months.

If you've checked your score and felt disheartened, don't panic. Whether you're rebuilding after a setback or just starting to build your [credit history](https://totalcreditcheck.co.uk/help-centre/articles/12-practical-steps-to-a-stronger-score/), anyone can move things in the right direction.

## What a credit score is

Your [credit score](https://totalcreditcheck.co.uk/help-centre/glossary/#credit-score) is a number reflecting how well you manage credit.

It's based on your credit report — your payment history, how much credit you're using, and any negative markers such as [defaults](https://totalcreditcheck.co.uk/help-centre/glossary/#default) or missed payments from the past six years.

There's no single universal score in the UK. Each credit reference agency calculates its own version from the data it holds, which is why [your score differs](https://totalcreditcheck.co.uk/help-centre/articles/why-your-score-varies-between-agencies/) depending on where you check, and why they all use [different ranges](https://totalcreditcheck.co.uk/help-centre/articles/where-a-600-credit-score-sits-in-the-uk/).

So what counts as [a good score](https://totalcreditcheck.co.uk/help-centre/articles/what-counts-as-a-good-credit-score/) at one agency might not at another.

## Timelines for common changes

**You registered on the Electoral Roll.** Being on the [Electoral Roll](https://totalcreditcheck.co.uk/help-centre/guides/why-the-electoral-roll-matters/) helps lenders verify your details and address. Once your council updates the register — usually monthly — the change should appear on your report shortly after. It can take longer during [certain times of year](https://totalcreditcheck.co.uk/help-centre/guides/when-your-electoral-roll-entry-appears/).

*Around 1 to 3 months.*

**You lowered your credit utilisation.** Your [utilisation](https://totalcreditcheck.co.uk/help-centre/articles/understanding-your-credit-limit/) is how much of your available credit you're using. Using too much makes lenders view you as dependent on credit. Paying down debt to reduce it should show once the lender updates the agencies.

*4 to 6 weeks.*

**You've made all your payments on time.** Consistency is the single biggest influence on your score. One or two months help; the real benefit comes with time.

*Noticeable improvement after 3 to 6 months.*

**You corrected an error.** If you spotted a wrongly reported missed payment or an account that isn't yours and raised a dispute, the correction can make a real difference once resolved.

*1 to 2 months, depending on how quickly the lender responds.*

**You added a new credit account.** Managing a new account well diversifies your credit mix and builds history. Be careful though — applying for too much in a short time has the opposite effect.

*3 to 6 months, if used responsibly.*

## What takes longer

Some things simply need time to recover from:

- **Missed payments** stay on your report for six years from the date of account closure, though their impact lessens.
- **Defaults and [CCJs](https://totalcreditcheck.co.uk/help-centre/glossary/#county-court-judgment)** also remain six years and can significantly affect your score.
- **Bankruptcies and [IVAs](https://totalcreditcheck.co.uk/help-centre/glossary/#individual-voluntary-arrangement)** are serious markers that take time to rebuild from — but it's entirely possible with patience and good habits.

If any of these are on your report, it isn't the end of the world. Everyone's journey is different; what matters is continuing to take positive steps.

## How often your report updates

Your report isn't updated in real time. Lenders typically report to the agencies **once a month**, and each agency updates when it receives new information.

So changes like a payment being made or a balance reduced [take time to appear](https://totalcreditcheck.co.uk/help-centre/guides/how-often-your-credit-report-updates/).

Checking regularly is how you track progress and spot problems early.

## The key things to remember

- There's no magic fix, but every change has a rough timeline.
- Electoral Roll: 1–3 months. Utilisation: 4–6 weeks. On-time payments: 3–6 months.
- Error corrections take 1–2 months depending on the lender.
- New accounts take 3–6 months to help — and only if managed well.
- Missed payments, defaults and CCJs last six years, with fading impact.
- Lenders report monthly, so nothing updates in real time.
