# Satisfied CCJs and your credit

Paying it off is a genuine milestone, and it doesn't clear the record. Here's what a satisfied CCJ still does, and the one-month window where it can be removed entirely.

**The short version:** a CCJ stays on your report for six years, unless paid within the first month. It affects your score, but on-time payments and good habits rebuild it over time.

When your [County Court Judgment](https://totalcreditcheck.co.uk/help-centre/glossary/#county-court-judgment) is marked **satisfied** — meaning you've paid it in full — that's a real achievement. Debt that went to court, and you've taken serious steps to clear it.

## Where a CCJ comes from

A lender that can't recover what it's owed may apply to the county court for a judgment ordering you to repay. That order is the CCJ.

The [credit reference agencies](https://totalcreditcheck.co.uk/help-centre/glossary/#credit-reference-agencies) don't get this from the court directly. It reaches them via the **Registry Trust**, and the fields they receive are limited:

- Date of issue
- Name
- Address
- Case reference
- Judgment amount
- Judgment status

Two consequences follow from that short list, and both matter.

**The claimant isn't recorded.** If you want to know which organisation raised the summons, your credit report can't tell you — only the court can.

**Name and address are all the agencies have to match on.** Which is why a judgment belonging to a relative at the same address can attach to the wrong person. If that's happened, [disputing a CCJ on your report](https://totalcreditcheck.co.uk/help-centre/guides/disputing-a-ccj-on-your-report/) sets out how to get it corrected, starting with the court and your case reference number.

## Who can see it

More people than you might expect, and this is where a CCJ does damage beyond your credit score.

Lenders see it, obviously. But **landlords and, in some circumstances, employers** treat a CCJ as a risk signal too. So it can affect your ability to rent a property or pass a financial background check for a job, not just your ability to borrow.

You'll find it in the court information section of your credit report.

## Does a satisfied CCJ still affect your rating?

**Yes.** Even paid off, the CCJ appears on your credit report for **six years from the date it was issued**.

It's visible to lenders throughout, and they may consider it riskier to lend to you because of it — which makes borrowing harder while it remains.

The silver lining: **lenders look more favourably on a satisfied CCJ than an unsatisfied one**, because it shows you took steps to resolve the debt.

Meanwhile, making your monthly repayments on any other credit agreements on time reduces the CCJ's impact on your score.

## Can you get a CCJ removed?

Potentially, two ways.

**Pay the debt within one month of the judgment being issued** and it's removed from your credit report entirely. You can apply to the court for a **certificate of cancellation** confirming it's been paid.

Take longer than a month and you get a **certificate of satisfaction** instead. If your report doesn't update automatically, provide this to the credit reference agencies to have the CCJ marked satisfied.

**Have the judgment set aside.** Where you think the CCJ should never have been issued, you can respond to it and ask the court to **set it aside**. Succeed and the entry comes off your report altogether.

## When does it drop off?

**Automatically, six years from the date of issue** — satisfied or not.

## Rebuilding afterwards

The impact reduces over time, provided you maintain a positive payment history. A CCJ received five years ago and paid will weigh far less than one from a month ago.

Three things to focus on:

- **Register on the Electoral Roll at your current address**, so the agencies and lenders can match your details when searching.
- **Keep up payments on your other credit agreements.** Every one is a step towards a better score.
- **Be mindful about new credit applications.** A lot in a short period suggests either over-reliance on credit or a lot of new credit recently granted.

**If you can't clear it in one go**, ask the lender about a monthly instalment plan. It won't shorten the six years, but it starts the repayment record moving and gets you to a satisfied status sooner than doing nothing does.

**A CCJ doesn't stay on your report forever.** Keep taking the right steps and your score should climb steadily while you wait for it to clear.

## The key things to remember

- A CCJ stays six years from the issue date, whether satisfied or not.
- Paying within one month removes it entirely, via a certificate of cancellation.
- Paying later gets you a certificate of satisfaction instead.
- Lenders view a satisfied CCJ more favourably than an unsatisfied one.
- Landlords and some employers see CCJs too — the effect isn't limited to borrowing.
- The agencies get only six fields from the Registry Trust, and not the claimant's name.
- A CCJ issued in error can be set aside and removed.
- The impact fades with time and consistent on-time payments.
