# Whether rent shows on your credit report

Rent is the biggest bill most tenants pay, and by default it counts for nothing on your credit file. There is a way to change that.

**The short version:** rent payments don't usually appear on your credit report. A rent reporting service can add them — helpful if you pay reliably, risky if you might not.

Rent is usually a tenant's biggest regular expense. Since it's a recurring outgoing like a mortgage or a loan, you'd think it would count towards your credit score. It isn't that straightforward.

## Will rent show on your report?

Credit reference agencies mainly receive data from lenders — banks, credit card companies. Payment information **isn't required** to be reported, so landlords and letting agents often don't report it automatically.

Which means you could rent for years, never miss a payment, and none of it would appear on your report or [affect your score](https://totalcreditcheck.co.uk/help-centre/articles/the-factors-behind-your-credit-score/) — unless you sign up to a rent reporting service.

## How to get it reported

You can get your rent payments recorded using a **rent reporter** service, which reports your [rent](https://totalcreditcheck.co.uk/help-centre/articles/moving-home-and-your-credit-score/) information directly to the agencies. It works in three steps:

1. **You sign up.** Several UK companies offer this, and most have free and paid plans.
2. **They track your payments.** You either link your bank account so payments are verified automatically, or your landlord confirms them. Some services contact your landlord directly.
3. **Your payments get reported.** Some services report to a single agency, others to multiple.

Once your rent is on record, positive payments help build your credit history and can lift your score over time. Missed payments can lower it.

## UK rent reporting services

- **Emma** — a budgeting app that reports to Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Tiered paid plans.
- **CreditLadder** — reports to all three. Free plan reports to one agency; paid plans available.
- **Canopy** — reports to all three. Free plan covers one agency; paid plans available.
- **The Rental Exchange (Experian)** — works with letting agents and housing associations to report rent to Experian.

Each works slightly differently, so it's worth checking which suits you.

## Will it improve your score?

Adding rent can build your credit history over time, particularly if you don't have much other credit. How much it helps depends on:

- **Your existing credit history.** If it's already strong, adding rent may make less difference.
- **Which agencies are notified.** Your rent only affects the scores held by the agencies it's reported to.
- **Your reliability.** Paying on time helps. Missing payments harms.

## The downsides

- **Missed payments now count against you.** Once your rent is reported, a missed payment leaves a negative marker.
- **It's one part of a bigger picture.** Some lenders take rent into account, but they'll weigh all of your credit health and your affordability when deciding.
- **Some services charge.** Free plans exist, but not everywhere — check before signing up.

## Is it worth doing?

If you always pay on time and want to build credit history, it could be a smart move. It's especially useful if:

- You have little or no credit history, or are [credit invisible](https://totalcreditcheck.co.uk/help-centre/articles/credit-invisibility-when-you-have-no-score/)
- You're planning a mortgage application and want to demonstrate reliability
- You want to improve your score without taking on more credit

If you're worried about missing a payment, or you'd rather not pay for the service, you may prefer to focus on [other ways to improve your score](https://totalcreditcheck.co.uk/help-centre/articles/12-practical-steps-to-a-stronger-score/).

## The key things to remember

- Rent doesn't appear on your credit report by default.
- Landlords aren't required to report payments, and usually don't.
- Rent reporting services can add it, via bank linking or landlord confirmation.
- Emma, CreditLadder, Canopy and The Rental Exchange all operate in the UK.
- Rent only affects scores at the agencies it's actually reported to.
- Once reported, missed rent payments count against you.
- Most useful for people with thin credit files or a mortgage on the horizon.
