How we build
Every page and component on this site is held to the same checklist:
- All controls are keyboard reachable, in a logical order.
- Focus is always visible, and never removed without being replaced.
- Touch targets are at least 44×44px; primary actions are 54px high.
- Status is communicated with text and structure, not colour alone.
- Tabs use
tablist, tabandtabpanelroles with arrow-key navigation. - Accordions use native
detailsandsummaryelements. - Animation respects
prefers-reduced-motion. - Important copy meets at least WCAG AA contrast.
- Error messages identify the field and explain how to fix it.
- Decorative graphics are hidden from assistive technology; meaningful ones carry alternatives.
Motion
Movement reinforces a change of state; it never blocks comprehension. There are no auto-advancing carousels and no essential timed content. If your system is set to reduce motion, animation is switched off rather than merely shortened.
Reading the content
Articles and guides are written in plain English, carry an "on this page" index, and are structured with real headings so you can navigate by heading in a screen reader. Every credit term used across the site is defined in the credit glossary.
What we have checked
Automated checks run across every page type — the homepage, the help centre hub, articles, guides, topic listings, the glossary, this page, the policy pages and the error pages. They confirm that every page has a single main heading, landmark regions, a working skip link, a language attribute, no duplicate element IDs, an accessible name on every link and button, a label on every form control, and decorative graphics hidden from assistive technology. Text contrast was measured against the colour actually painted behind it, including translucent panels and gradients.
Known gaps
These are the things those checks found and we have not yet fixed. They are listed here rather than left out.
- Some small print falls just short of AA contrast. A handful of items between 9px and 12px measure between 4.2:1 and 4.5:1 where 4.5:1 is required — the labels inside the sample report on the homepage, and the price note in the article sidebar. The shortfall is small but real.
- The Share button on articles is smaller than our own minimum. It is 54×20px, below the 24px minimum and well below the 44×44px we commit to above.
- Heading levels skip a step in card grids. Topic listings go from the page heading straight to card headings, and the glossary's "jump to a letter" index sits at the wrong level. Navigating by heading still works, but the outline is less clear than it should be.
- Three links on the free statutory reports page have no destination yet. They will point to Experian, Equifax and TransUnion once the URLs and wording clear compliance.
- No testing with real assistive technology yet. Automated checks catch a minority of accessibility problems. Screen reader, magnification and keyboard-only testing with real users is still to come.
