What a financial association is#
A financial association is a link to another person, created when you take on credit together.
It's created by:
- Making a joint credit application with someone.
- Holding a joint account with them.
- Acting as a guarantor on a credit agreement for them.
Mortgages, secured loans and joint bank accounts are the obvious ones, but it extends much further — loans, credit cards, utilities. Any of those can create the link.
Associations remain on your report indefinitely unless you ask for them to be removed. They don't lapse with time and they don't end when the relationship does.
How it affects your applications#
Your report shows the associate's name only, not their credit data. That's why an association has no direct effect on your credit score.
The effect comes at application time. When a lender receives an application from you, they may search your associate's details alongside your own and assess you jointly. If that person's report carries adverse history — defaults, a CCJ — it can count against your chances.
You may find it harder to be accepted, or find the rates offered are worse than before. The reasoning is about repayment capacity: if a lender sees your associate carrying large debts, they may assume you'll end up helping to repay them.
Why their searches show on your report#
This one surprises people, particularly after a separation.
While you remain financially associated, a lender assessing their application can search your report too — because you could affect their ability to repay. So their credit activity can produce searches on your file long after you've stopped applying for anything together.
It might be something small, like a car insurance quote, or something substantial like a home improvement loan. Either way, seeing searches you didn't initiate is a strong sign the association needs clearing up.
What to do before you start#
The disassociation will fail if any active link remains. So before you request one:
Close all joint accounts you share, or remove your name from them (or theirs from yours).
Then wait. It can take four to six weeks for an account to show as closed on your credit report. If you closed a joint account yesterday, you'll need to wait for that to appear before the request will work.
Check your report and confirm every joint account is showing as closed. Remember the list is wider than a joint bank account or mortgage — loans, credit cards, utilities all count. If any of them are still open or still carry both names, the request won't succeed.
Getting this wrong costs you the full waiting period twice over, so it's worth being thorough before you begin.
Making the request#
Once every joint account is closed and showing as closed, you can raise a disassociation with the credit reference agencies.
You'll need to do this with each agency separately — Experian, Equifax and TransUnion each hold their own records, and removing an association at one doesn't remove it at the others. Each will ask you to confirm that the financial connection has genuinely ended.
If an agency needs supporting evidence, they'll tell you what they want to see.
What happens next#
When an agency receives a disassociation request, it looks for any active account still linking the two of you.
If it can't find one, it removes the name from your report. If it does find a live connection, it will tell you that the disassociation can't be completed, and why.
Expect the process to take around 28 days.
You could of course leave the association in place. But it will then sit there indefinitely, and that carries real risk — not to your score, but to every application you make. Checking in on your report periodically is what catches these before they cost you something.
The key things to remember#
- Associations are created by joint credit, and last indefinitely until you remove them.
- They don't affect your score, but they can affect every application you make.
- Their credit searches can appear on your report while the link is live.
- Close every joint account first and wait four to six weeks for it to show as closed.
- Raise the request with each of the three agencies separately.
- Allow around 28 days, and expect it to fail if any active link remains.
